Ray was born in Louisville KY to James and Elizabeth (Ising) Whalen on March 8, 1931. He was married to Mary Louise Wuertz on September 10, 1960.
As a proud Veteran of the Korean War (1951–1954), Ray served as a Sargeant in the United States Army. Subsequently he attended Bellarmine University in Louisville KY where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Over the next five decades, Ray was employed as an Accountant. Following his retirement as Controller at Marist School, he worked as a volunteer at his parish church, Our Lady of the Assumption, as well as Northside Hospital in Atlanta. An enthusiastic sports fan, Ray enjoyed attending football and basketball games for many years at Georgia Tech. His other interests included listening to music and singing in his church choir. An avid fan of sweets, Ray never met a dessert he didn’t like.
With a servant’s heart, Ray truly embodied the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, honorable, compassionate, and to make a difference.”
He was proceeded in death by his parents and five siblings.
Ray is survived by his wife Mary, his four children, Michael (Cheryl), Mary Elizabeth Stevenson (Allan), Maureen Hardin (David), and Patrick, his 7 grandchildren, and his 9 great-grandchildren
