

Richard (Dick) H. Jones (CAPT USN Ret.) of Atlanta, VA unexpectantly died on August 28th in his home. He was preceded in death by parents, Herbert W. Jones and Nellie Oliver Jones, sister Stella Jones Dominic and his former wife, Marjorie Jackson Jones. Born and raised in Salem, Ohio, Dick graduated from Salem High School in 1948 and The Ohio State University in 1952.
During his 30-year career in the Navy, Dick served in multiple roles on five warships in addition to his administrative capacities. One of the highlights of his career was serving as Commanding Officer USS Turner Joy (DD 951). His final role with the Navy was Head, Command Liaison, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Dick was awarded the Bronz Star, American Defense Service Medal, Navy European Occupation Services Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with TWO Stars and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal. Folling retirement from the Navy, he served in personnel and engineering capacities for Naval contractors. He retired a second time at 88 to enjoy travel, spending time at the cabin, and working out at the YMCA.
Dick loved Ohio State sports and earned a Varsity “O” as manager of the baseball team. He lived Bucks sporting events and attended the Rose Bowl and celebrated the school’s National Championships in Basketball and Football. Go Bucks!
Dick is survived by his wife and companion of nearly 40 years, Lois Goins Jones, daughter, Valerie Jones Housden; son Steven Jones (Genet); grandchildren Shannon Mashaal (Karam); Katherine Paluh (Chase); Anthony Jones; and Sabrina Jones; and six great-grandchildren.
