Richard Carl Southerland

June 13, 1966 – December 16, 2025
Obituary of Richard Carl Southerland
IN THE CARE OF

H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel

Richard Southerland, age 69, of Inlet Beach, Florida, passed away on December 16.

Richard lived a life marked by dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic. He proudly served as a firefighter specialist in the United States Air Force, a role that reflected his courage, sense of duty, and commitment to service. He later retired as Vice President of Engineering and primary shareholder of Active Minerals, where he was respected for his leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to excellence. Even after retirement, Richard continued working as a small business owner of GulfSouth Holdings, LLC, reflecting a lifelong belief in responsibility, perseverance, and showing up each day with purpose.

Throughout his career, Richard was known not only for his professionalism, but for the way he treated people. He consistently reminded his teams that family comes first, and he took great pride in mentoring others, offering guidance, encouragement, and support both professionally and personally.

Richard earned his MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), an achievement that reflected his drive for continual learning and professional growth. A devoted Alabama football fan, he took great pride in cheering on the Crimson Tide and enjoyed sharing that passion with his family.

Above all else, Richard loved his family deeply. He is survived by his loving wife, Dara Southerland; his children Natalie de Vente (John), Nathan Southerland, Nicole Evans (Jay), Nita Cannon (Brent), Kayla Thomas (Jacob), and Bryce Southerland; and his ten grandchildren, who were a constant source of pride and joy. Richard’s warmth, intelligence, and devotion to his family will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at Lakeside Church, on Old Rocky Ridge Road in Birmingham, Alabama, at 2:30 p.m.

Richard’s legacy lives on through his family, the example he set through hard work and integrity, and the many people he guided and encouraged along the way.
