Mr. Sterling attended the Hawkin and University Schools in Cleveland and was a graduate of the Gunnery School Washington, CT, Brown University and Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He served as an officer in the United States Naval Air Force. Mr. Sterling was an investment manager and former SVP of Shearson Lehman Brothers, and a VP of White, Weld & Co, JP Morgan Chase, Woods Struthers, Winthrop, Merrill Lynch and an Executive VP of Melhado Flynn and Associates.
Mr. Sterling served on numerous boards including being a former trustee of Lennox Hill Hospital for 15 years in New York, The Norton Museum of Art, The Preservation Society, the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, and the Community Chest United Way of Palm Beach and was on the International Advisory Board of the Museum of Modern Art (Modern Art Oxford) in Oxford England. He was a former trustee of the Game Conservancy of the USA, and of the Institute of Sports Medicine of NY.
He was a 50 year member of University Club of NY and The Everglades Club, Bath and Tennis Club of Palm Beach, The Meadow Club and Bathing Corp of Southampton, and Annabel’s Club in London. He was also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati where he was past President of the New York States Society, a former President of The New England Society of NY, and recipient of their JP Morgan Medal, and a member of the Pilgrims and St. Nicholas Society.
Mr. Sterling was born in Cleveland, OH where his family were original settlers from Connecticut in the early 1800’s. He resided in Palm Beach, FL, Atlanta, GA and New York. He is a direct decedent of William Sterling who came to America from England and settled near Essex, Connecticut in the early 1630’s and of Captain Abijah Sterling who participated in several engagements in the American Revolutionary War. He was also descended from Major General Elisha Sterling of Salisbury Connecticut, who was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and States Attorney.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Lanier Milner Sterling and three sons from a previous marriage, Robert Livingston Sterling, William Lee Sterling and Cameron Platt Sterling, 2 grandsons; Blake and Aren and 4 granddaughters: Clare, Sophie, Alexis and Piper of Greenwich, Connecticut and his sister Cynthia Cleminshaw of Cleveland. He was the son of Robert Lee Sterling of Cleveland and Kathryn Durell Brand of Cleveland and Chicago, and grandson of George B Durell and Robert W. Sterling of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held Friday September 26 at 11
