Rosalind M. Anderson, amateur woodworker, professional volunteer, keeper of fun lists (a mob of robins, a crash of rhinos), and a generous and beloved Mum and grandmother, died Monday, January 19, 2015, after a year-long battle with cancer. Born in Winnipeg, Canada on March 5, 1931, Roz was in a league of her own. Roz graduated from the University of Manitoba where she met her future husband Jim Anderson. The newlyweds crossed the 49th parallel the day after their wedding and ultimately moved to Atlanta in 1956, where Jim pursued a successful actuarial career and Roz pursued their four active, headstrong children - yet still found the energy to host elegant dinner parties, the famous Anderson Children's Christmas Party, foreign guests for the Atlanta Council for International Visitors, an integrated 1960's dialogue group, and dinners for her children's many friends. An ardent volunteer, Roz led a Cub Scout group for inner-city kids, and with the support of Harriet Darnell, taught women to sew at the senior center; she became a Master Gardener and answered questions for DeKalb Extension Service; she coached softball, once earning a perfect 0-20 record; and she led the Stone Mountain Meals on Wheels for more than ten years before moving to Dunwoody where she volunteered with Project Open Hand at the Community Assistance Center and donated to a myriad of community causes. A Maeve Binchy fan, Roz was an avid reader who never could remember a book title, but often quoted Shakespeare, Dickens and T.S. Eliot. She played bridge like the gambler she was (she gleefully tested the limits of her gas tank), built dollhouses, told punch lines of jokes first, and enjoyed beating her grandchildren in Scrabble. Rosalind was predeceased by her parents, step-mother and two sisters, her husband James C.H. Anderson, her son Michael R.J. Anderson, who gave her three grandchildren, J. Michael Anderson, Andrew C.A. Anderson and Katherine M. Wilson, her son Andrew M.C. Anderson whose unexpected death at the tender age of three tested her resilience, and her son William J.H. Anderson, upon whom karma thought fit to bestow triplet sons Benjamin W. Anderson, James I. Anderson and Thomas A. Anderson. She is survived by her son Miles A. Anderson of John's Creek and his sons Tyler A. Anderson and Ryan R.M. Anderson and her daughter (fifth time's the charm) Elizabeth A. (Betty) Dworschak of Sandy Springs and her children Madison E. Dworschak and Wilson T. Dworschak. Rosalind bids a fond farewell to her wonderful daughters-in-law, Barbara, Janet and Maria Anderson, her son-in-law Tom Dworschak, the family of her beloved sister-in-law Katherine-Mary Gibson of Abbotsford, British Columbia, and the children and grandchildren of her sister Isabel Milne Ryan of Toronto, Ontario. Though far in miles, Roz's Canadian family was never far from her heart. Services will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30319, 404-261-3510 MAP on Friday, January 23 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Roz (aka Mum, Grams or Gramski) would urge us all to "Be kind to others and do good work." If you are so inclined, Roz's family would welcome donations in her name to the Community Assistance Center of Sandy Springs (www.ourcac.org).
