

Dr. Roy Nicholson Smith, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on July 5, 2013. He was born December 25, 1923 in Gadsden, Alabama. He served in the Army during World War II. He attended Emory University College and Emory University Dental School. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances DeVane Smith, his son, Dr. Nick Smith and wife Marion of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Marisa and Corey Smith, his daughter Suzanne and husband John Hall of Falls Church, Virginia; daughter, Melissa and husband, Greg Zerillo of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Josh and Anna Cherry and daughter, Amanda and husband, Joe Boor, of Tallahassee, Florida; grandchildren Sam and Davis Boor. Roy was the last surviving member of the original Emory Clinic. He was especially fond of the relationships he developed with his colleagues and patients in the 38 years that he practiced dentistry at the Emory Clinic and then in private practice with his son. He always cherished the friendships that he formed at the Leafmore Creek Park Neighborhood and the Big Canoe Community where he spent his retirement years. He enjoyed hunting, tennis and golf. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the Big Canoe Chapel Scholarship Fund or the Methodist Children’ Home in Decatur, Georgia. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, July 14, at 2:00 p.m. at Glenn Memorial Methodist Church on the Emory University Campus.
