Ruth was born the youngest daughter of Albert Sidney Dyer and Martha “Mattie” Horton Robinson Dyer in Birmingham, Alabama during World War I and survived the Depression there. After attending schools and doing clerical work there she married Aubrey Hoover also of Birmingham. During the 50’s they lived for a while in Mineral Wells, Texas where Aubrey worked for the U.S. Department of Defense as it is known now, before returning to Birmingham. They had two children- a boy Michael and a girl Martha Jo. They both attended Woodlawn High School the same as their parents. Michael got his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. Martha graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro at the age of 19. She worked as an au pair in Germany and later for the U.S.O. there before marrying an Army Major and becoming an “Army Wife.” After her husband died she married twice more and had Ruth’s only granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Hoover-Gordon who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Whitman College, a small liberal arts college in Walla Walla, Washington. She worked for Google in San Francisco and left to earn her M.B.A. degree from Stanford University. After Aubrey’s death in 1971 Ruth went to work for the Census Bureau in Atlanta from which she retired. After that she became a “world traveler” making trips to such diverse locations at Turkey, Greece, Europe, the British Isles, Fiji, Australia, and China. At some point she found time to move to Napa, California to be close to her daughter who was at the time a successful stockbroker/financial planner in San Francisco as was her husband, Michael Gordon. Martha unfortunately died at the age of 51 after three brave bouts of cancer. After that Ruth moved back to Atlanta to be close to her son Michael, who practiced law in Atlanta and Sandy Springs as a partner with the firm of Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd, Cadenhead. Michael is now retired. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hmpattersonspringhill.com
