Sarah Bass Brennan, 73, of Roswell, GA, passed away on May 2, 2019. She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Bass Lee (John) of College Station, TX; her brother Charles David Bass of Hendersonville, NC; her nieces Anne Lee Widdison of Port Orange, FL, Denise Lee Odom (Andy) of Murphy, TX, and Ellen Bass Hoy of Woodstock, GA; and her nephew Samuel Ross Bass of Decatur, GA.
Sarah was born on March 10, 1946 in Roanoke, VA. She graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, VA in 1964, and obtained her nursing degree from The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC in 1967. Sarah had a 50-year career in the nursing profession, and she particularly valued her years as a home health care nurse. She was confirmed as a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta in 2012.
Sarah grew up in small towns, but she was born for the big city and got to Atlanta as soon as she could. She was politically engaged from the start – Sarah was always up for a protest, and if the protest turned into a party then so much the better. She rubbed shoulders with a great many local luminaries – even if she occasionally rubbed them the wrong way, as when Manuel Maloof banned her from Manuel’s Tavern for dancing. Through her career as a nurse and her committed advocacy Sarah always worked to help make a better world. Her family remembers her as a loving sister and aunt, a witty storyteller, a creative gift-giver, and a festive spirit who loved animals as well as music and art of all types.
A celebration of Sarah’s life will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11:00 AM at H.M. Patterson & Son – Spring Hill Chapel at 1020 Spring Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org.
