

2017 following a lengthy illness. Had he lived until July 16, he would have been
90 years old.
He graduated from E. Rivers Grammar and was in the same
Brookwood Hills car group for 7 years with lifelong friends Bertie Beers
Shepherd, Bill Parker Jr., Crawford Sites, and Bob Strickland Jr. He was an
Eagle Scout in Troup Number 5 Buckhead.
He graduated from Marist Preparatory School where he was Vice President of
TKO fraternity. He entered Georgia Tech during WWII and joined Chi Phi
fraternity. He volunteered for the Navy in 1944, returned to Tech at the
war's end, and served as President of Chi Phi fraternity.
Seth was descended from Scottish immigrants who were educators, in Kentucky,
Tennessee and Virginia; his grandfather William Frederick Mellen was the
President of the University of Tennessee, and great aunt Mary Julia Baldwin
founded the Mary Baldwin College, now university, in Staunton, Virginia.
Seth was President of the Mellen Parts Company, Atlanta's oldest independent
automotive parts distributor founded by his Father in 1922. At his death
he was the longest serving member of the Atlanta Rotary Club. He was a past
director and honorary life member of the Piedmont Driving Club. Also a past
director and honorary life member of the Nine O'clocks and a charter member
of the Piedmont Literary Society. He also served on the Board of Directors
of the Canterbury Court Episcopal retirement home in Buckhead.
Seth was predeceased by his loving wife, the former Joanne Gaillard Merritt.
Surviving are his daughter Anne Gaillard Mellen, son Seth Baldwin Mellen III
and his brother William Robert Mellen of Charlottesville, Virginia. Also
surviving are his daughter-in-law Audrey Barnes Mellen, grandsons Seth B.
Mellen IV and his wife Leigh, Graham Barnes Mellen, John Hanahan Mellen,
and one great-grandson.
The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to caregivers Vera
Braswell and Robert Carter.
Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree
Street, Friday, July 21 at 11:00 am. After the service, there will be a
lunch reception in the church's parish hall, and then an escorted procession
to the interment at Westview cemetery.
Instead of flowers, any contributions would be appreciated to St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
