Steve was born February 18, 1967, the oldest son of Winefred Anne Smith and William Dexter Brooks. Steve grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and spent most of his life there. He was a 1985 graduate of The Lovett School. He then attended The University of Virginia where he was an Echols Scholar and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated in 1989. Afterwards, he worked on Capitol Hill for Senator Buddy Darden before attending The University of Georgia School of Law, where he excelled. He began his legal career at Freeman & Hawkins, and ultimately spent 18 years as a partner at Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough. Steve was a very skilled trial attorney and loved litigating complex cases for his clients, be they individuals or large companies.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother Winefred Anne Brooks Thompson. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of twenty-five years, Marla-Deen Thomas Brooks, his sons William Deen Brooks, Stephen Smith Brooks, and John Thomas Brooks; his father William Dexter Brooks (Robin); his brother Todd Christian Brooks (Avery); his nieces Kathleen Anne Brooks, Lucy Manning Brooks, and Rebekah Christian Brooks; his nephew Michael Farris Thomas and sister in law Amy Thomas; his step brother Scott McCormick, as well as countless friends and colleagues.
Steve was a devoted father and loved nothing more than cheering on his sons as they excelled in their various sporting endeavors. He was passionate about coaching youth sports at Buckhead Baseball and Northside Youth Organization (NYO). Steve was a member of Northside United Methodist Church and The Buckhead Lions Club. He was also a member of The Capital City Club and loved playing golf or working out. He loved life, Tom Petty and the Georgia Bulldogs. Steve was greatly loved and will be missed by his family and his many friends. He will be remembered for his charm, intelligence, and quick wit.
The Celebration of Steve’s life will be held Monday, March 11th at 2 p.m. at Northside United Methodist Church.
