Steve was born in Huntington, New York to Josephine and Roy Hancock and was raised within the Catholic Church. He attended elementary school in Huntington along with six other boys born the same year in this idyllic neighborhood. Steve always spoke fondly of this part of his childhood and a big part of his heart never left Huntington. In the early 1970’s, Steve’s father retired and the family moved to his father’s home state of Kentucky - quite a change from Long Island, New York!
Steve graduated from Murray High School in Murray, Kentucky and received his bachelor’s degree in Business from Murray State University. He received his MBA from Vanderbilt University Owen School of Business.
Steve joined South Central Bell on December 30, 1983 – two days before the Bell System was split up. He served in various Finance management positions within the Bell/AT&T family of companies from that day until his death.
In his life outside of work, Steve found supreme enjoyment and pleasure circling the world with a host of friends. In the past 20 years, he visited more than 65 countries around the globe.
Steve is predeceased by his parents, Josephine and Roy Hancock. He is survived by his first cousin Jacqueline Sarnecky Lewis of Hartford, Connecticut, and three second cousins: Christine Saltenberger, Michael Sarnecky and Allen Lewis; as well as a large circle of loving, grieving friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2014 at 1 o’clock at Patterson’s Spring Hill. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior. There will be a gathering afterward in the Grand Ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel, 75 14th Street, NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30309. Complimentary valet parking provided.
