Thomas Lawrence Donnelly, 85, passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia, after an extended illness. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Tom or Tommy, as he was known to most, lived a life marked by dedication to his family, career, and passions.
Born to Robert Donnelly and Nellie Lawrence in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 27, 1940. Tom grew up with a strong foundation of values that guided him throughout his life. He attended Father Ryan High School in Nashville, where he and his brother, Boots, excelled as athletes. He attended and played football at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee where as a fullback, he was the team's leading rusher in 1962 and 1963.
Thomas met his wife, Judy, at an old-fashioned sock hop. They married in 1960 and have been a wonderful example of faith and love through the years. Tom began his professional life as a teacher and football coach at several institutions in Kentucky. Flaget High School in Louisville, Trinity High School in Louisville, and St. Joe Prep in Bardstown. His commitment to mentoring young minds and fostering athletic excellence left an indelible mark on countless students and athletes. While living in the Louisville area, Tom came to know several members of the Beam family from the Jim Beam distillery in nearby Clermont. These friendships ultimately led him to take a sales job with Jim Beam in 1968. Tom and Judy moved from Kentucky back to their hometown of Nashville, and after several years they relocated to Atlanta, where Tom was promoted to lead the Southeastern division of Jim Beam Brands, a position he held until his retirement in 2007. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom found joy in the game of golf—a pastime that brought him relaxation and camaraderie over the years. Those who knew him will remember his love for the sport and the many cherished moments spent on the course.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Donnelly; his sons Lawrence Donnelly (Jennifer) and Thomas S. Donnelly (Phany); grandchildren Graham, Jude, and River; and his brother James "Boots" Donnelly (Carole). He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Lindy Donnelly as well as by his parents Robert and Nellie Donnelly.
A memorial Mass will be held on March 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Cathedral of Christ the King, located at 2699 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, Georgia. A reception will follow immediately after the service. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Tom’s legacy lives on through those who loved him. May memories of him bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
