Violet Dennis Tierney was born on May 9th, 1921 to her mother Katie Bell Dennis and father Walt C. Dennis in rural Roanoak, Alabama and later gained a younger sister, Marianna North. She left her home as a teenager to live in Atlanta, Ga with her aunt Mary Briskey to attend school, where she graduated from Commercial High School of Atlanta in 1939. She joined the US Army in 1945 in the air transport command, where she met the love of her life, James Joseph Tierney, while stationed in Miami. Shortly after their marriage, Violet became pregnant with their only child, Mary Tierney Amerson, and was given an honorable medical discharge from the WACs to start her family. The couple moved back to Atlanta, Ga where they put down roots and raised their family together for over 60 beautiful years. Violet spent her professional career in Atlanta working at the CDC as a key punch operator for over 30 years. In that time she was very active with social and volunteer work for over 40 years at her home parish of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was an avid bridge player and traveled the world over her lifetime. Her greatest pride and joy was her family who she is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by; her daughter, Mary Tierney Amerson, her granddaughter, Lisa Michelle Reynolds, her two great-granddaughters, Jaimee Garcia (Kain Garcia) and Maggie Jackson (Garrett Jackson), and her great-great-granddaughter Charlie Marie Jackson.
Join us as we celebrate her life by wearing bright colors and your Sunday best. In lieu of flowers, Violet has asked that donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul or St. Martin de Porres in care of Holy Cross Catholic Church in her honor.
