Virginia May Mitchell, 87, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, philanthropist and donor to arts, education, and culture, died March 16, 2018, after an extended illness. She was born January 27, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of George and Mary Moore May.
Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Christ the King High School in Atlanta, then earned her Bachelors of Arts from Webster College in Webster Groves, Missouri, and finally her Masters Degree in Education from St. John’s University in Queens.
Spending most of their married lives in Farmington Hills, Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, the late Eugene Mitchell (d. 2007), nephew of Pulitzer-prize winning novelist, Margaret Mitchell. She is survived by several cousins.
Mrs. Mitchell furthered the generosity that she and Gene together had with generous financial support to Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as many additional social and human service agencies, including trying to eliminate childhood hunger throughout the world.

Visiting hours are planned for Friday, March 23rd, from 4-6 pm at H.M. Patterson & Son-Spring Hill Chapel, Atlanta. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 24th, at 9:00 am at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, beside her beloved Gene.
