

Watson (Andy) Armstrong, 70, architect and artist, died unexpectedly on May 31, 2016 with his wife, Susan Mack, by his side. Andy was born in Lexington, KY to Watson and Kitty Armstrong. He attended University of Kentucky training school from kindergarten through high school. He graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Architecture, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He served in the U.S. Air Force for two years active duty, followed by eight years in the Air National Guard. He moved to Atlanta, where he worked for the architecture firm of Cooper Carry. He left to start his own firm, Armstrong Associates Architects, that specialized in residential new construction and high end renovation. Recently he added a design consultation service to make good architecture more affordable to a larger underserved market. He was an early adopter of applying advanced commercial building science practices to residential buildings, green building, and healthy home standards. He was an accomplished painter, having participated in group and solo shows. He wrote poetry and incorporated his poems into his paintings. Andy was also an accomplished floral arranger, having studied with several noted New York florists. Andy and Susan, his wife of 35 years, enjoyed biking, ballroom dancing, cooking, travel, renovating their homes, and taking care of their rescue dogs. Andy was predeceased by his parents and his aunt, Anne Lewis Wilson, all of Lexington, KY. He is survived by his wife Susan L Mack and nephews Joshua T. Fussell (Annie), Grady, and great nephew Tyler Locke Fussell. A service to commemorate his life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday June 4, 2016, at H.M. Patterson and Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, Brookhaven, GA 30319. A reception will follow.
