William John D’Alessandro, age 93, passed away suddenly on October 20, 2023, near his home in Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret D’Alessandro (nee Caparco), sons Peter and Richard D’Alessandro, daughter-in-law Susan E. Beggan, and 12 nieces and nephews, and their spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Anna D’Alessandro, brother Ignatius Arthur D’Alessandro, and ten brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Although suffering some of his own health problems, Bill remained a principal caregiver for his wife, Marge, to whom he was married nearly 66 years.
Bill was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from New York City College with a degree in Chemical Engineering. His engineering career spanned 37 years where he made significant contributions in the development of polystyrene and phenolic foams, brake linings, grinding wheels, printing inks, and polyester gel coatings. He was awarded 7 US and 15 foreign patents on new resin bonding compositions and applications. Always a creative thinker, he worked hard both day and evening to ensure his family continued to be supported. He even inspired some of his sons’ friends to become chemical engineers.
Shortly after beginning his career, he served as a quartermaster for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a physical scientist in Natick, MA.
Since his teenage years, he was athletic, enjoying handball, racquetball, and tennis. After retiring, he enjoyed writing stories and poems, playing games, and occasionally playing pool. In recent years, Bill and Marge enjoyed playing daily games of Upwords together, and when the opportunity arose, included their sons in the fun, who often had a hard time keeping up.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 5, at H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel in Brookhaven, GA. Viewing begins at noon, followed by a service at 1:30. The interment follows at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA at 3:00. The family requests those honoring Bill’s life to consider donating to the National Kidney Foundation in lieu of sending flowers.
