

She was a thoughtful and devoted family member and a friend to many. Her bright and optimistic spirit brought joy and fun to others throughout her life.
She was born in Lineville, Alabama. At an early age Carmen and her family moved to Ashville where she grew up and made life long friends After graduating from Ashville High School she attended Gadsden State Community College. Following this she began exploring various opportunities. She relocated to California followed by Florida making new friends and gaining work experience. She worked in banking, insurance, and performed secretarial work. Her favorite work was in law enforcement serving in West Palm Beach Florida, Gadsden, and Rainbow City. She was a dispatcher and an assistant to detectives. She completed her career in the local court system.
After settling in the Gadsden area, she met her husband, Stan Hopper. Together they enjoyed traveling, especially to the Caribbean. They also enjoyed welcoming friends and family at their homes in Florida and Alabama.
Carmen was a long term caregiver to her parents and her husband, Stan. She was devoted and patient. Those who observed her care believe she may have missed her calling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan Hopper; parents, Wylie R. and Priscilla "Sue" Cartee; brother, Larry Cartee; and in-laws, R.B. and Sue Hopper.
She is survived by her sister, Tennie (Robbie) Davis; aunt, Joanne Lewis; nephews, Chuck Cartee, Jeremy (Laura) Cartee, and Alex Plimpton; nieces, Amanda (Jay) Vice, and Jenny Plimpton; and close cousin, Michael Ousley.
Carmen had many friends who were truly family to her. A special thanks is extended to Tressa Massey and her family for the dedicated and loving care provided to Carmen as she came to the conclusion of her cancer journey. The gratitude her family feels can not be adequately placed into words.
Great appreciation is felt for the care provided to Carmen by Dr. Darryl Outlaw, Dr. Elquis Castillo, Heather Corbin CRNP, and the Gadsden staff at Hematology and Oncology Associates of Alabama, as well as her wonderful hospice staff. Special thanks to Carmen's supportive friends- Donna, Marlene, Bob, and Sue for their devotion, compassion, and love.
Services will be held at Cornerstone Church 530 Chestnut Street, Gadsden Alabama on June 5. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am with a Memorial service to follow at 11 am.
