In 1997 he was named Alabama Business Person of the Year and was presented the award at the national conference in Anaheim, California. One of his most significant accomplishments was the support he generated for projects to improve business education programs in Alabama.

He was vice president for the Etowah County Community food bank. He also served as a volunteer fireman with the Southside Volunteer Fire Department and was a member and supporter of the Etowah Count Chapter of the American Heart Association. His grandchildren often referred to him as Superman, as his work ethic could be contested by no one else. In addition to his accomplishment, he was a man who was cherished by all who met him. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him and his name always brought praise. Elmus was a family man who came out of retirement to work at Regency Pointe as a security guard in 2001, in order to help raise his grandchildren. He loved his family above all else and his actions always showed it. No request was too big or too small for him, and he would help you with anything.
Elmus Humphrey was a Godly man all his life, and held a close relationship to the Lord. His home church became Gospel Temple Christian Center in Gadsden, where he was always attending church with his wife and grandchildren there for the last 21 years.
In his downtime, his favorite thing to do to pass the time was watch Alabama football games. He was a loyal and fierce supporter of the Crimson Tide and never missed kickoff. It became a yearly tradition for him and his son, Kevin, to pick one game a year to go see together, and they often watched together at home every Saturday. For his 80th birthday, he celebrated by going to an Alabama Home game and then came home to a suprise party filled with everyone who loved him. The room couldn't hold everyone who wanted to be there. Elmus was a light in the world to many people and the hole it has left is immeasureable.
