Born on July 27, 1939, Ernest was the youngest child of the late Franklin and Mattie Battles. A man of unwavering character, he believed deeply in the words of his favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” He spent his life living out those words, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, hard work, and love for his family.
For 61 wonderful years, Ernest shared a devoted marriage with the love of his life, Sandra Battles. Together they built a home centered on faith, love, and family.
He was the proud father of one daughter, Melanie (Scott) White, who was always and forever her daddy’s girl. Nothing brought Ernest greater joy than spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandsons, who lovingly knew him as Papaw. His grandchildren quickly learned that Papaw never told them “no,” and they treasured every moment spent with him.
He leaves behind his cherished grandsons, Justin White, Ethan (Amanda) White, Steven (Devyn) White, and Allen (Callie) White, who will forever remember the countless life lessons he taught—not only through his words but by his example. Whether it was teaching them the value of hard work, showing them how to solve problems, or proudly teaching each of them how to drive, Papaw made ordinary moments into lifelong memories.
Ernest was also blessed with six great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life: Owen White, Bailey McKay, Emma-Katherine White, Elsie White, Easton White, and Greysen White.
He is also survived by Carol Obarr, Dany Battles, Catherine Fohl, and Brenda Smith, along with extended family members whom he and Sandra lovingly helped raise. Their lives were forever enriched by Ernest's guidance, generosity, and unwavering love.
A hardworking man throughout his life, Ernest believed there was no substitute for honest labor. He instilled a strong work ethic in his daughter, grandsons, and everyone around him—not simply by telling them how to work, but by showing them every day through his own example. His quiet strength, dependability, and willingness to help others will never be forgotten.
An avid outdoorsman, Ernest found peace in God’s creation and treasured every opportunity to spend time outdoors with those he loved. His greatest accomplishments, however, were not measured by what he owned, but by the family he raised and the values he passed down through generations.
Those who knew Ernest will remember a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud Papaw, and a man whose life reflected honesty, humility, and steadfast love. His legacy will continue to live on in the lives of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m., with burial at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Steele, Alabama.
The family finds comfort knowing that Ernest’s good name and faithful example will continue to guide future generations, just as he always hoped it would.
