

Gabriel Francis Pettit, age 91, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024. He was born June 28, 1932 and was a graduate of Gadsden High School in 1953. He left during high school to serve in the Navy and returned to complete high school after discharge. He worked at The Steel Mill for 44 years in Gadsden from 1953 until closure, starting in Truscon and ending in the Coal Strip. Gabriel’s family asks that he be remembered as being a loving father, grandfather, husband, and brother.
Throughout his life, Gabriel was a devout and loving Christian who loved to read the bible to his wife and his two beloved children. He loved playing violin, dulcimer, going to blue grass festivals, watching westerns, and hunting quail. After his career, he enjoyed being a part of city council and loving his wife and children. After losing the love of his life of more than 60 years, he spent his days being a devoted father, loving his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar A. Pettit and Mary Owens Pettit; three of his siblings, Evangilene Pettit, Paul Gene Pettit, and Edgar A. Pettit Jr; his wife and the love of his life, Lois Whitt Pettit; his older daughter, Susan Diane Pettit; as well as his granddaughter, Dylan Arminda Burson.
He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Reaves and Lorna Stargell (Teddy); two sister-in-laws, Violet Pettit and Phyllis Pettit; daughter, Karen Pettit Whaley (Don); son-in-law, Danny Clonts; four grandchildren, Jonathon Burson (Julianna), Ashley Blanton Crossley (Brandon), Jeffrey Burson (Amanda), Leah Davies (Teddy), and Eric Wildman (Carrissa); and three great-grandchildren, Baylee and Austin Crossley, Aurora Burson, and Raliegh Wildman.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 2:30pm at Morgan Funeral Chapel & Crematory with a graveside to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation for friends and family to begin at 1:30pm.
