Gene was born in 1931 in Andalusia, AlabatTia. He was a young child of the Great Depression. He had one older brother and four younger brothers and sisters. He was drafted in the U.S. Army and served in the Infantry Division as a .50 caliber machine gun specialist in combat where he earned his Combat Infantry Badge.
After the military, he started and managed a diesel service business in Anniston that eventually resulted in a freight trucking company where his younger brothers, Charles and Bobby Wood, and he worked for several years. In that time, he met and married Jackie Wood, who was the love of his life. During that time, his father, J.M., had started a fruit and vegetable store on South 11th Street in Gadsden. His father wanted to pursue other opportunities, so he sold the Wood Corner store at Public Auction where Gene and his brother Charles bought the business and started Wood Brothers Grocery in 1968. The customers and friends all expressed what a kind and generous soul he had helping customers put food on the table for their families when money was tight. He had a true love for his family and friends with a gift of the ability to share smiles and laughter with anyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Wood; son, Toby Wood; father, James Marvin Wood; mother, Mazie Wood; brothers, Jim Wood, Charles Wood, and Bobby Wood; and sister, Joan Wood.
Gene is survived by his son, Jeff Wood; daughter, Brandi Wood; sister, Louise Gandee; along with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Morgan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
