Jacob Probus of Huntsville, Alabama, a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and beloved friend, passed away at the age of 36 on the 15th of July, 2019, 12:26 AM, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Alabama. Jacob was the friendliest soul one could hope to know. His love for life and other people shone in everything that he did. He was an inspiration to all in the way he loved and served others. For the past several years, he devoted countless hours serving the homeless community in Huntsville. He would do anything for anyone at any time.
The center of Jacob’s life for 18 years was his love, Mandy. Jacob and Mandy shared a storybook romance built around free-spirited living, nature, friends, fun, and service to others. What a love they shared. Jacob loved her deeply and did anything and everything she ever wanted. Mandy loves him so much and made him a happy man. They have two sons together, Finley (9) and Sawyer (4). Jacob was a role model father, spending countless hours playing, teaching and shepherding.
Jacob was a camping enthusiast (learned from his late father, Dean), and lived for weekends and holidays at various campgrounds around the southeast. He always had his bride and their two boys, plus any and all friends (everyone always welcome) along for the adventures. Jacob had a love for music and songwriting, which he used as a way to express his emotions and convey his artistry.
Jacob is a native of Glencoe, Alabama. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Glencoe High School in 2001 and later from Jacksonville State University. He spent his early career in the newspaper business in Gadsden, Alabama. While he loved writing and covering community news, he sought to impact lives in a more direct fashion. He applied and was accepted to the Teach for America program in 2014, and began his career teaching history in the Huntsville City School system at Westlawn Middle School from 2014-2017. Since 2017 he taught at Mae C. Jemison High School. Jacob made profound impacts on many students in his short career. The 2018-2019 Jemison High yearbook quoted a student as saying: “Mr. Probus is a great teacher because he doesn’t just leave students hanging. He will give his all to make sure you pass, plus he has good vibes.”
Indeed he did have good vibes, as anyone who had the opportunity to spend time with him will attest. Jacob’s vibes will reverberate into eternity as each of the lives he touched will seek to honor him by loving harder, living bolder, laughing bigger and serving more.
Jacob was preceded in death by his father, Dean Probus and his grandparents Lamar and Kathleen Lee. He is survived by his wife, Mandy, their two sons, Finley (9) and Sawyer (4), his mother Peggy Probus, brother Zac (Karen) Probus, adored cousins, nieces and nephews, in-laws, and countless loving friends.
A Celebration of Life honoring Jacob will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at Back Forty Beer Company from 2:00 – 5:00 PM.
