Jerome “Jerry” Shulock passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, surrounded by his family in Gadsden, AL. His heat, after so many years of loving so very much, finally wore out beyond what his strength of will and the best of medical care could overcome. Jerry was born in East Chicago, Indiana, on November 10, 1947, to George and Irma Shulock, with siblings Becky, George, Maggie, Fran, and Sally. He was part of the chosen family of Nick and Vivian Medonic with his best friend Ron and sister Carole. He grew up serving as an altar boy, fishing, camping, and playing with his closest friends in The Chevelles.
On April 30, 1965, Jerry played gig in East Chicago that changed his life forever when Carol Shulock came to the dance and fell for the bass player. Jerry and “Little” formed a partnership that was led to marriage in 1969, followed by birth of daughter Carry, and added Lewis and Evelyn Matthews and Carol’s brother and sisters Herschel, Sharon Ann, and Kim to the extended family. Carry married David Sexton in 1995, and granddaughter Rory arrived and enraptured her Poppa in 2002.
Carol and Jerry’s love and marriage of 57 years is legendary and is the force that has kept them going and thriving through everything. They enjoyed life change’s together in Scottsboro, AL and Peoria, AZ, and have thwarted the physical challenges that threatened them along the way. There is truly the love of a lifetime, and more! Jerry was a father and grandpa beyond compare, a stalwart champion and an instigator and professor and supporter and technical support (if not a smart phone fan). He gave us all, family and friends both, the tools we needed and the drive and opportunity to use them out in the world for ourselves and our own families, friends, and communities. His love of bad puns and good stories is unrivaled and will never by forgotten by his adoring audiences, either. Jerry served in the US Navy and trained as an electrician during the Vietnam War and worked on power plant instrumentation throughout his career. Service to others was a central theme of his life, though very active roles in the US Jaycees, Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, and in his local Catholic parishes. He was always there for others, offering the support and he could and teaching and creating community wherever he went.
Jerry was a devoted Alabama Crimson Tide fan and loved Arizona Wildcats basketball. He could usually be found watching the game or on his bass boat or the golf course. Sports
and politics and music were some of his favorite topics to argue with friends and loved ones.
Jerry is survived by his wife, “Little,” his daughter Carry, son-in-law David, and granddaughter Rory, sister Sally McMahon, Carole and Kevin Orze, Carol’s sister’s Kim Whorton and Ann Matthews, and many nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by his friends at Regency Pointe Assisted Living in Rainbow City.
Services will be held Friday, July 17, at Morgan Funeral Home in Attalla, AL, with visitation at 1:00, service at 2:00, and a shared meal at 3:00. Donations to Habitat for Humanity or your local food bank are encourage in lieu of flowers. Roll Tide!
