Gene was born at home in Gadsden, Alabama, on June 26, 1936. One of seven children, he grew up on Tabor Road and graduated from Etowah High School in 1954. He later attended trade school and began working for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in the late 1950s.
In October 1959, Gene enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. As a Private First Class, he was deployed to Germany, where he served as a Military Policeman. During his military service, he formed lifelong friendships that he cherished and maintained throughout the years. After nearly three years of honorable service, Gene returned home and resumed his career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where he worked faithfully for 42 years before retiring in 1997.
In 1964, Gene met the love of his life, Eulaine Campbell Barron. They were married on April 16, 1966, and shared 56 wonderful years together. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Terry, Darrell, and Christy.
In his thirties, Gene dedicated his life to Jesus Christ and faithfully served the Lord, his church, and his community for the remainder of his life. He was a member of Noccalula Masonic Lodge #931 and lived according to its principles and values. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Gene and Eulaine were devoted members of Gallant Road Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing hymns and serving as a deacon.
Gene enjoyed NASCAR racing, turkey hunting, fishing, coin collecting, and working as a shade-tree mechanic. Above all else, he loved his family fiercely and devoted his life to providing for and serving them. He treated everyone with kindness and respect and was known for expressing his gratitude with a heartfelt, “God bless you.”
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Eulaine Campbell Barron; his parents, Herbert H. Barron and Mattie Florence Barron; his brothers, Wallace Barron, Ray Barron, Ralph Barron, and Jimmy Barron; and his sister, Evelyn Ward.
He is survived by his children, Terry Barron (Ginger), Darrell Barron (Kim), and Christy Entrekin (Joe); his three “best ever” grandsons, Jackson Barron, Nicholas Barron, and Lucas Hammond; his sister, Betty Sue Covington; along with numerous extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the PCU staff at Riverview Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care. Special thanks are also extended to Jane Martin, devoted friend and caregiver, for her kindness and support.
