Joseph Dock Mashburn, “J.D.", 90, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, on Thursday, June 14, 2018. In Heaven, he joins his wife, Margie, the love of his life. Visitation will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel at 1p.m. with funeral services at 2p.m. The Reverend O.B. Works will be officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
J.D. was born in Ragland, Alabama to Gordon and Manila (Henderson) Mashburn on May 2, 1928. He was a member of Morton’s Chapel Church in Walnut Grove and former member of Shiloh Methodist Church in Kennesaw, Georgia. He attended Emma Sansom High School, then joined the Army Air Corp in February, 1946. He served in Occupied Japan after WWII. In his early years, he was a watchmaker. His instructor, Mr. O.R. Roberts and his wife’s uncle, Arlie Holiday and his father-in-law, Cecil Clarence Champion, were the most important mentors in his life. He retired from Lockhead Aircraft in Marietta, Georgia. J.D.’s love of gardening was his gift to the people he loved. He always made time to gather fruits and vegetables from his garden to give to his family and friends. He was happiest of all with
his hands in the dirt on his beloved farm.
J.D. was preceded in death by his wife Margie (Champion) Mashburn; son, Cecil Mark Mashburn; granddaughter, Charity Ledbetter; son in law, Enoch Kerry Ledbetter; brothers, Elvin, killed in combat in WWII, Bill, Paul, and Roy Mashburn; one sister, Bertie Edrene Mashburn Owen.
He is survived by his two sons, Joseph “Joe” (Keena) Mashburn, Brent (Bethanne) Mashburn; his three daughters, Susan (Dennis) Connelly, Sara (Danny) Duffey and Cathy Ledbetter; his twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He always reminded his grandsons to be good soldiers. 2 Timothy 2:3. Pallbearers will be his grandsons; Dennis Roland Connelly Jr., Joseph Shannon Mashburn, Kevin Joseph Connelly, Brandon Enoch Ledbetter, Barry Drew Mashburn, Joseph Earl Duffey II, Cody Mark Mashburn, Philip Mark Mashburn, Micheal Jesse Mashburn, Matthew Ryan Mashburn, Isaac Paul Jared Kirby, and Rockman Browning Sainsbury.
