Larry Erskine Howard, Jr., age 66, of Attalla, Alabama, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025. Born on March 20, 1959, in Harvey, Illinois, Larry lived a life marked by deep faith, devoted service, and unconditional love for his family and community.
At just 13 years old, on April 6, 1972, Larry made the most important decision of his life—accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior. His faith would become the foundation of everything he did. A 1978 graduate of Oak Forest Christian Academy in Oak Forest, Illinois, Larry continued his education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, graduating in 1980. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sandy, who would become his wife of 44 years.
Larry dedicated 33 years of his life to the Attalla Police Department, serving with integrity, compassion, and strength. In September 2001, following the tragic events of 9/11, Larry answered the call to serve beyond his community, volunteering alongside fellow officers to help provide security in New York City—a testament to his courageous heart and servant spirit.
A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Attalla, Larry lived out his beliefs daily and led by quiet, consistent example. His greatest pride and joy, however, were his children, whom he cherished deeply. Family meant everything to him.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Larry E. Howard, Sr. and Velma (Wiggins) Howard; his brother, James Howard; and his beloved daughter, Jessica Howard.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandy Howard; his son, Larry (Kym) Howard, III; his sisters, Terrie Hoffer, Cathy (Bobby) Weltmeyer, and Vicki (Bob) Judd; as well as a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Chapel & Crematory, with the funeral service to follow at 6:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Lou Rodriguez. Larry will be laid to rest at Crestwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity in Larry’s honor—a reflection of his generous heart and commitment to serving others.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. David and Mary Wallace, Blessed Care Sitters, especially Wesley Wright, and Amedisys Hospice Care for their compassionate care and support.
Larry’s legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live on in all who knew him.
