Born on November 20, 1940, Luther lived his whole life in Rainbow City and worked his entire career for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. at its plant in Gadsden, Alabama, before retiring in 1997. However, Luther never retired from his true passion: cattle farming. A longtime member of the Alabama Cattleman’s Association, Luther was a farming man, through and through. Even up until his final days, he made every effort to be on his farm as much as possible.
Luther was a lifelong Auburn Tigers fan and a dedicated supporter of youth athletics. He took great joy in coaching his son Calvin’s little league baseball and basketball teams. Luther was also an avid supporter of the Southside Panthers and Westbrook Warriors, where he was a familiar presence in the stands of both schools, and loved by all for his unwavering support and passion. For his children, grandchildren, and most recently, even his great-grandchildren, Luther never missed a sporting event. He was there with a lawn chair or stadium seat, rain or shine.
However, the greatest legacy Luther leaves behind is one of deep and abiding faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Luther was a lifelong member of White Springs Baptist Church in Rainbow City where he served for many years as a deacon and leader. At White Springs, Luther was involved with the Royal Ambassadors program, discipling boys to lead lives of faith and purpose. He also volunteered with the youth program, frequently chaperoning retreats and trips across the country.
Known to many as just “Granddaddy,” Luther was a committed family man who took joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was most content while riding on his tractor or eating a good meal at one of his favorite local restaurants. By every measure, he lived a complete and full life—all the way to the end.
Luther was preceded in death by his son, Calvin, his devoted wife of 53 years, Barbara Ann, son-in-law, Mel Johnston, his parents, Broughton and Imogene Riddle and two sisters, Ann Page and Erlene Gilbert.
Luther is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Sharon Coker, his daughters, Penny Ramsey and Jill (Jimbo) Lawley, his grandchildren, Cory (Chris) Skelton, Jesse Lawley, Luke Riddle, Ella (Nic) Hillman, and Noah Riddle, his great-grandchildren, Stone and Cash Skelton and Calyn Kate and Camden Hillman, his daughter-in-law April Riddle, his brother James (Judy) Riddle, and Mitch Ramsey—a friend who has been a chosen son in recent years.
Though he will be missed tremendously by all who love him, we take great comfort in knowing that because Luther fought the good fight and ran with endurance the race set before
him, he is now in the presence of Jesus and that he has been eternally reunited with those gone before him—especially his wife Barbara Ann and son Calvin—whom he loved dearly and longed to see again. We draw strength as well from the promise that we have through the resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, that we too will one day join Luther, our Granddaddy, on that “Unclouded Day.”
“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”
Funeral Service will be Wednesday, October 14th, 2026 at White Springs Baptist Church at 2PM with Pastors Chris Terrell and Jay Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Rainbow Memorial Gardens.
