Born on August 1, 1952, in Iowa, Greg was the eldest of seven children born to Peter Valjean Gregerson, Sr. and Janet Gregerson. As a child, he moved with his family to Illinois before ultimately making Gadsden, Alabama, his home. There, he built a life rich in family, friendship, community service, and countless cherished memories. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents.
Greg lived life to the fullest. He embraced every opportunity to serve others, enjoy the outdoors, travel the world, and spend time with those he loved. He graduated from Gadsden High School and later attended Hillsdale College, where he continued to develop the leadership qualities that would define much of his life.
Throughout his distinguished career, Greg earned the respect and admiration of his peers through his dedication to both his community and the grocery industry. His greatest passion was his service to Shriners International, an organization that remained close to his heart throughout his life. A proud Freemason, Greg valued the principles of brotherhood, charity, and service that guided his life. Among his many accomplishments, he served on the Shriners International Board of Directors, as well as on the boards of both local hospitals. He was Past State Chairman of Ducks Unlimited, served on the Alabama Grocers Association Committee, was Vice President of The Food Industry Association, Past Chairman of the Etowah Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Gadsden Industrial Development Authority, Chairman of the Alabama Retail Association, and Executive Chairman of the National Grocers Association, CEO of Absolute Fitness, and President GFI.
Through his industry leadership, Greg frequently traveled to Washington, D.C., where he advocated tax reduction efforts and policies affecting the grocery industry. His work provided opportunities to meet with national leaders and public officials, including sharing meals with Presidents Bush and Donald J. Trump—experiences he greatly enjoyed and often remembered fondly.
Outside of his many professional and civic achievements, Greg was known for his love of adventure and appreciation for life's finer pleasures. An avid duck hunter and traveler, he especially treasured visits to Ireland and Bora Bora, two of his favorite destinations. He enjoyed sharing a good cigar, a fine bottle of wine, and meaningful conversation with family and friends. Greg was an avid collector of fine wines, and among his extensive collection, Darioush remained his favorite.
Above all, Greg loved his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife, Pamela Gregerson; his children, Jennifer Eubanks, Nicole Jones, Michelle (Josh) Bates, Erin (Phillip) Hunt, Miranda (Jeremy Edge) Mink, Grant (Celeste) Galle, Matthew Duke, Dawson Duke, and Coty Duke; numerous grandchildren; his brothers and sisters; many nieces and nephews; additional family members; and countless friends whom he considered brothers and sisters. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Norman Mayne, whose friendship was a treasured blessing in his life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Earl Duke and the compassionate staff of Amedisys Hospice, especially Hannah Young, for their exceptional care, kindness, and support during Greg's final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Greg's memory.
Greg's legacy of leadership, generosity, service, and love of life will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
