Phillip Morrice Walker, 70 years of age, joined his brothers and son Cody Walker in heaven on September 14, 2023, at St. Vincent’s East Hospital. He was a resident of Ashville, Alabama where he spent most of his life before joining his Lord and Savior.
Visitation will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel, in Attalla on Monday, September 18th from 5:00pm – 8:00pm with the funeral being held at 12:00pm Tuesday the 19th with graveside services to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Phillip was born in Gadsden, Alabama on January 16th, 1953, to the late Jeanette and Billy Joe Walker. Phillip grew up on Walker Drive with his brother’s Billy Wayne Walker, Ellis Walker, James Roger “Pee Wee” Walker, Jackie Walker and his sister Phillis Walker who died at birth.
Phillip graduated from Glencoe High School and was most known for his musical talents in the high school marching band. His love of music continued throughout his adult life as he was a drummer of the Stillbrook Band, and several other bands with many of his close friends.
Right out of high school, Phillip began work at the Gulf State Steel Plant, where he earned the lifelong nickname “Wild Jessie”. After the steel plant closed its doors, Phillip turned to his next passion and opened Walker Marine in Ashville, Alabama. He spent the majority of his life chatting with his beloved customers who were like family, while occasionally turning the wrench, fixing boat motors, and calling out part numbers.
Phillip loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed being behind the microphone and was always known to be singing or humming a tune. He enjoyed karaoke and spending time on the water while hollerin’ at his friends and kids to fix the boats while he was driving them. Phillip had the gift of simply listening to a boat and knowing exactly what was wrong. Phillip spent the last several years of his life with Brenda Whitt. They shared so many wonderful memories and adventures together singing, taking boats out, and traveling. They enjoyed taking the RV out and spending time finding new campsites, sitting around the campfire with his family and grandkids telling stories and cooking dinner, he loved a hot dog cooked over the open fire. Phillip went by Pop and/or Poppy to his beloved grandkids. Phillip loved being Poppy and talking to his grandkids and spending as much time with them as he could. He loved singing, playing music, and going to all their events. He took pride in being there for them.
Phillip lived a life like no other and there will be a huge void now that he is gone. He had a wealth of knowledge spanning across his years of training and hobbies that included being a PADI certified scuba diver, martial arts black belt level instructor in Shorin Ryu, and a proud Commander of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Rainbow City Flotilla 8-2 to name some closest to his heart. If you had a question or a problem, he could fix it over a phone call. Phillip was friends with everyone he met and probably had an adventure story to go with it. Phillips lifelong friends Ron Seawright, Jack Lay and the late Carl Boyle could write numerous books on all the great stories and tales of the One and Only Phillip Walker. Phillip filled so many different roles in every life he was a part of, each one being better because he was in it.
Phillip is survived by his 10-year life partner and love of his life Brenda Whitt; Sons Lashawn Walker (Brittany), Andy Walker (Heather), Nick Walker (Jordon), Jonathan Whitt (Kristen). His grandchildren, Sydney Walker, Ayden Walker, Braden Kleinatland, Cody “CJ” Walker Jr., Andrew Walker, Ellison Walker, Isaac Whitt, and Adeline Walker. As well as several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, extended family, and close friends.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.morganfuneralchapel.com for the Walker family.
