

Born Nov. 2, 1947, to Verlyn and Sue McCurdy Cox, he grew up in Etowah County and graduated from Gaston High School. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and served his country in Vietnam. His cancer was a direct result of his exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant used in the jungles of Vietnam. Following his enlistment, he served as a patrol officer for the Gadsden Police Department and later worked for the United States Postal Service.
Verlyn will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara McClellan McCurdy; his children, Annette McCurdy, Verlyn (Kim) McCurdy, Lisa Chanack and Carotta McCurdy; his brother, Steve McCurdy; sisters, Mary Ann Jones, Linda Bowen and Jean Bailey. He was a loving Paw Paw to 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, David McCurdy; his sister, Elaine Driscoll; brother-in-law, David Jones; nephews, Tony and Allen Hale and Bob Driscoll; and his granddaughter, Misti McCurdy.
Funeral service will be held today at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla at 2 p.m. The Rev. Kenneth Patterson will officiate.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Graveside service with military honors will be at Rainbow Memorial Gardens following the chapel service at the funeral home.
