William Clay

Mr. Clay graduated from Emma Sansom High School with the Class of 1960. That same year, he joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country until 1966. Following his military service, he began a long career with Republic Steel, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.

In 1966, Mr. Clay married the love of his life, Nancy Butler Clay. Together, they built a life centered around family and faith.

A devoted Christian, Mr. Clay was a faithful member of Attalla Church of Christ for more than 60 years. His love for the Lord was an important part of who he was, and he was always proud to share his faith with others. Each day, he made a conscious decision to live in a way that reflected the Lord he loved and served.

Mr. Clay will be remembered as a faithful, gracious, generous, and giving man. Giving was truly his love language, and he found great joy in helping and caring for others. He also enjoyed fishing and classic cars and was known for his dry sense of humor that could catch those around him by surprise and bring plenty of laughter.

He is survived by his daughters, Kellie (Glenn) Smith and Robin (Jeff) Burnett; grandchildren, Katie (Brandon) Cahela, Jessie (Josh) Davenport, Rhyan Chance, Morgan Higginbotham, and Megan Burnette; great-grandchildren, Raelynn Cahela, Rebecca Cahela, Klorie Davenport, Jagger Davenport, and Lillie (Chase) Ashworth; great-great-grandchildren, Rylie Ashworth, Stetson Ashworth, Raylee Danford, Maddie Danford, and Michael D. Underwood II; brother, Charles Ronald Clay; sister, Kathy Clay; and special family members, Larry, Bonnie, and Angie Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Clay and Evelyn McClure Clay; and his brother, Jerry Clay.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Amedisys Hospice, especially Payton and Josh, for the compassionate care shown to Mr. Clay and his family. They would also like to express a special thank-you to the congregation of Attalla Church of Christ for the tremendous love and support they have shown Mr. Clay and his family.

Mr. Clay leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, humor, and love. His life reflected the beliefs he held so dearly, and his family will remember not only the things he said about his faith, but the way he chose to live it each day.

A memorial service will be held to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Clay on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Regular Church Service from 11-12 p.m., Memorial Service at 12:30 p.m. With fellowship to follow. The service will take place at Attalla Church of Christ, 503 Hughes Ave, Attalla, AL 35954. Family and friends are invited to join us as we come together to remember, honor, and celebrate his life and the memories he leaves behind.
