He was born Aug. 17, 1928, in Bettsville, to Claude and Mary Ann Swartzmiller. April 7, 1951, Newton married Betty Bogner.
Survivors include a brother, Robert (Judy) Swartzmiller; two sisters, Phyllis Neill and Sharon Leach; a sister-in-law, Sue Swartzmiller; a brother-in-law, Gene Nagel; nine children, Cynthia Alspach, Rebecca Mason, Trudy (Steve) Kauffman, David (Denise) Swartzmiller, Terri (David) Drosky, Cheri Swartzmiller, Douglas Swartzmiller, Scott Halcomb and Dawn (Randy) Groves; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild due in October.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Keith, Bill, Larry, Richard and James Swartzmiller; two sisters, Lois (John) Ziegler and Connie Nagel; a brother-in-law, Elmer Neill; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
Newton was a lifelong dairy farmer.
The Swartzmiller family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Home, 1295 W. Tiffin St., Attica, OH 44807 (419) 426-4094 A rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
His memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 320 Stump Pike Road, Attica, with Father Jacob officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Newt’s memory to Autumnwood Activity Department.

He will be sadly missed by all those who loved him, especially by the love of his life, Betty.
