Ruth Kurtz was born in Seneca County to Estella (Marquart) and Carl Shoup on March 4, 1920. She graduated from Attica High School in May 1937. Ruth passed away on December 14, 2017 at the age of 97 at Willow Brook Assisted Living in Delaware, Ohio where she was a resident since December 2015.
She was married to Robert D. Kurtz (deceased January 1999) for 58 years who preceded her in death. She was also married to Raymond Lauer (deceased July 2003) for 2 years. She is survived from the Kurtz marriage by 3 daughters and a son: Connie (Peter Schanz) of Clinton, Ohio; Randall (Lynn Grosserhode) of Dallas, Texas; Vicki (Ray Main) of Argyle, Texas; and Regie (David Powell) of Delaware, Ohio; 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Ruth was a life-long member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Attica. She was baptized April 11,1920 and confirmed June 19,1933 and was a very active member of the congregation. She participated in various church choirs, Bible courses and studies, taught Sunday School and Junior Lutherans, served as an officer for the Church Women, served on the Global Mission Synod Board, volunteered at Lutheran Memorial Camp and for Meals on Wheels.
She belonged to the Homemakers Extension Club and the Literary Guild. She and Bob participated in Craft Shows for 14 years making ornaments and toys. She loved to sew and was always busy with her hands. Over the years she made over 650 quilts and blankets for Lutheran World Relief and other charities as well as making quilts for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Donald Shoup and a sister Dorothy (Shoup) Bittikofer. Her favorite Bible verses were Matthew 24:30 and Romans 8:38-39. She loved to sing and listen to music. Her favorite hymns were “He Leadeth Me”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and “God Will Take Care of You.”
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Edward Hunker officiating the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The staff of the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, 295 W. Tiffin Street, Attica assisted the family with arrangements.
