Evon Frances Basque

Evon Frances Foster Basque passed away on August 30, 2026, in Auburn, California. A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Evon lived a life rooted in family, community, work, and her hometown.

Born May 28, 1930, in Auburn, California, to Frank Foster, of Pilot Hill, and Estelle Foster,of Wyoming. She spent her childhood in what is now known as DeWitt, often reminiscing about years picking berries, running barefoot through the creek, eating miner's lettuce, fennel, and mustard flowers, and swimming in Atwood Pond. In 1942, her family moved into the downtown area of Auburn.

Driving along Haines Road toward Dry Creek Road brought memories back. Evon recalled fishing in Dry Creek and catching catfish with her bare hands near places where blackberries grow.

Evon attended Auburn grammar schools and graduated from Placer High School in 1948. While at Placer, she participated in the school bowling league, beginning an interest in the sport. She bowled on leagues and she was proud of her perfect 300 games.

During high school, Evon worked at The State Theatre as a candy girl and usher.She would tell stories about how employees were not allowed to take uniforms home; they were worn for the shift and left upstairs.

During the summer months , she wrapped and packed pears and plums at the fruit shreds in the county. After graduating, Evon moved to Sacramento and worked for the telephone company.

When she returned to Auburn, Evon worked for Placer County at the courthouse as an assistant auditor. Her dedication to her career did not stop there. She went on to earn her master’s degree from Golden Gate University and ultimately retired from Placer County after an extraordinary 42 years of service.

Evon married Tony Anthony Basque of Roseville, whom she met at the Dance Hall off Taylor Road, formerly Highway 40. Together, Evon and Tony welcomed their only son, Keith Anthony Basque, and built a life of family and shared interests.

They were involved in Keith's baseball. They became successful owners of prize-winning Appaloosa racehorses, traveling to county fairs throughout California. Together, they loved to play golf. Evon and Tony were members of the Auburn Jeep Club.

Evon had an adventurous spirit and a love for experiencing life. In 1992, Evon traveled with Keith to Barcelona, Spain, for the Summer Olympics. She traveled to China with Mike Holmes Navy League. After Tony passed, Evon started taking organ lessons and purchased her own organ. She also took up art where she decoupaged, and sculpted a bust in her class.

Her connection to Auburn extended far beyond simply living here. Evon was an active member of numerous local organizations :

Auburn Business Women, Soroptimist International of Auburn, Auburn Leadership, the Elks, and the Gold Country Fair Boosters. She gave generously of her time and remained deeply connected to the community she loved throughout her life.

Above all else, Evon treasured her family.

She was preceded in death by parents Frank and Estelle Foster; husband Tony Anthony Basque; and son Keith Anthony Basque.

Evon is survived by daughter-in-law Carolynn Burns Basque; granddaughters Keilynn Basque Baliantz ( Eric), and Kacy Basque Eagan (Josh); great-grandchildren Quilla, Maya, Ayiana, Valentino, Carter, Payzlee, Ayla, Julian, and Landon. She is also survived by extended family members David and Coco Burns.

Evon took great joy in being part of the lives of her great-grandchildren. She celebrated their birthdays, attended their events and activities whenever she could, and treasured the time she was able to spend watching them grow. Her family was an enduring source of pride and happiness throughout her life.

The family thanks Saddleback Loving Hearts for the kindness, love, and care they provided Evon, including Vivian and Mary, her friends there. A very special thank-you goes to Corine, whose rare gift for providing physical, emotional, and everyday support with such genuine love brought comfort and companionship to Evon and her family.

Evon’s 96 years were filled with stories worth telling—from barefoot childhood days along Auburn’s creeks, to perfect bowling games, racehorses, world travels, decades of public service, and generations of family she loved dearly. She leaves behind not only a lifetime of memories, but a legacy woven deeply into her family and the Auburn community she called home.

A celebration of Evon's life will be held Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at General Gomez, 808 Lincoln Way, Auburn, California.
