Gary Richard Cave died on August 5th 2019 after a long painful 2 year battle with cancer. Born 10-17-1945 in Seattle, Washington to Russel Bradford Cave and Miriam Gladney, the family settled in Woodland until 1952 when the family moved to Esparto and then to Sacramento in 1964. Gary attended Sac City College earning a degree an AA degree before working for State Department of Water Resources, and then relocating to State Department of Park and Recreation for a long and happy career.
Gary’s many interests included snow skiing in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Wyoming. He was also an avid fisherman spending many hours on the rivers and lakes in the region and tied most of his own fishing flies. Probably his best fishing memories were of his fishing trips to Alaska for salmon. A real outdoorsman, he took every opportunity to join with friends to hunt birds, mostly pheasant in local hunting clubs. He also took the grandsons turkey hunting in the Spenceville wildlife area. The boys did love those camo clothes. He and his shooting pals were always welcome in the northeastern corner of California where they hunted squirrels for the alfalfa farmers. After moving to Orangevale in 1983 Gary spent many hours on his boat on the American River fishing for what was in season. Being just a straight, short drive from home to the river it was almost as the river was his personal water way.
After we moved to the Grass Valley property in 2003, Gary put many hours in improving the yard, installing irrigation water from the ditch quite a distance from the house. He installed irrigation to provide for the lawns, gardens and pastures surrounding the house and installed deer fencing to protect it all. He also enjoyed a trip to Ireland.
Gary is survived by his wife of 22 years, Judy, a son, John, step daughter, Dora Schlessinger, grandsons Tyler and Wade , a brother, Bruce, sister, Dianne and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held August 31st, 2019 at 11:00 am, at Chapel of The Hills. 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gary may be made to the American Cancer Society or other research group.
