

Jim attended grammar school in Auburn and graduated from Sacramento Senior High School. After working briefly in San Francisco and spending two years in the Army, he returned to Auburn and retired with 40 years of service for the California Division of Forestry. During his service, he received the California State Medal of Valor for a 1970 rescue mission at the Hazard Mine near Foresthill. Jim enjoyed motorcycles (dirt riding) and making trips to the Nevada desert with the “Boys.” He recalled fondly his custom car friends from his early years.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Harry (Slim) Dougherty and mother Bernice Banks (husband George I. Banks). He will be missed by sons Mike, Rick and Kim, long-time partner Ellen Geil, daughter Lisa (Geil) Bazinet (Dan) and grandson Dominic, as well as his nephews Kevin, Michael and extended family. Jim passed away peacefully on March 15, 2017.
Services will be as follows:
Visitation - Thursday, March 23, 5 - 7 pm
Memorial service - Friday, March 24, noon, Chapel of the Hills in Auburn.
Reception will follow at the Veterans' Administration Building in Auburn.
