Born on October 1, 1947, in Ross, California, Jim grew up in Marin County and attended Redwood High School. After graduating, he answered the call to serve his country and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His sense of duty and resilience carried through every chapter of his life.
Jim spent most of his professional career with the Marin Municipal Water District. His dedication to his work and community was evident throughout his years of service until his well-earned retirement.
In 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Christy. Their marriage spanned an extraordinary 57 years—a partnership built on laughter, shared adventures, and unwavering devotion. Together they raised their daughter Sara, and later welcomed son-in-law Geoff into the family. Jim took immense pride in watching Sara grow up and found deep joy in being an active part of his grandchildren’s lives—Owen, Evan, and Olivia.
A devoted grandfather, Jim cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines at sporting events or attending school performances, he never missed a chance to support them. He especially loved early mornings after sleepovers when he would share donuts with them—a simple tradition that brought him great happiness.
Jim had a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He loved fishing and boating—activities that allowed him to connect with both the world around him and those he loved. Gardening was another passion; his garden was not only immaculately maintained but also a reflection of his love and care.
He also enjoyed working on cars and fixing things around the house—skills that came in handy when he rebuilt their Lake Almanor home after it was partially destroyed by fire. That home became a special retreat for family gatherings and quiet moments alike.
Jim had a gift for storytelling and humor. He always had a funny story ready to share—whether with old friends or new acquaintances—and he delighted in making others laugh. His personality made him easy to befriend; he formed lifelong friendships wherever he went and continued making new ones throughout his life.
Later in life, Jim and Christy moved to Granite Bay to be closer to Sara’s family—a decision that enriched their lives with daily joys and meaningful time together. From casual afternoons watching games to evenings enjoying performances, Jim embraced every opportunity to be present for those he loved most.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Kathleen Stocking, as well as his brother Patrick.
He is survived by his beloved wife Christy; daughter Sara and her husband Geoff; and three treasured grandchildren: Owen, Evan, and Olivia.
James Frederick Stocking will be remembered for his humor, generosity of spirit, love for family, and enduring friendships. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on November 21, 2025, from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM at Chapel of the Hills 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603. We would like to create a book of memories of dad. If you have a memory, story or something you would like to share, please bring already written down or we will have a place for you to do so. We would also love if anyone would like to share any of these stories during the service.
Epitaph
When I die
Give what’s left of me away
To children
And old men that wait to die.
And if you need to cry,
Cry for your brother
Walking the street beside you.
And when you need me,
Put your arms
Around anyone
And give them
What you need to give to me.
I want to leave you something,
Something better
Than words
Or Sounds.
Look for me
In the people I’ve known
Or loved,
And if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live on your eyes
And not on your mind.
You can love me most
By letting hands touch hands,
By letting
Bodies touch bodies,
And by letting go
Of children
That need to be free.
Love doesn’t die,
People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
Is love,
Give me away.
I’ll see you at home
In the earth.
