Laurie was an outspoken, but compassionate, presence in my life and in the life of Auburn itself. It was a privilege to have come to know Laurie as one of our dearest friends. She taught me a great lot about business, about life and work in a small town, and more. 

She had a special way of loving on those who had experienced loss. Many years ago, while living in Los Angeles, Laurie noticed in a corner booth the familiar face of crooner Dean Martin. He was alone, and drowning in the grief of his son’s recent death. Laurie walked to his table and expressed to him her love and her belief that Dean had brought decades of comfort to people through personal interaction, and his comedy and music.

I will never forget Laurie for one of many acts of kindness and love. It was a Thursday. She learned that my spiritual mentor was dying in Mississippi. She told me, “You are going to see him, aren’t you?” “No,” I responded. “I checked for air fare, and it is outrageous right now,” Laurie immediately said, “Michael, I have more points than I will ever use. Go home and pack a bag. I will arrange your flight.”The next day, I was sitting beside my mentor’s hospital bed. What an extraordinary gift.

I will miss her love and laughter. Auburn has now lost both Bud and Laurie, two generous voices in our hometown.
