Sept 5, 1923 – March 29, 2020
Born in Timberlake, South Dakota to Myrtle and Chris Hauan, Muriel lived with her family on a homestead until the family relocated to Auburn, California in 1935. Muriel and her three brothers attended a one room schoolhouse in South Dakota then Auburn schools. She graduated from Placer High School in 1941. On September 7, 1941 she married Jasper Raught and five months later Jasper entered World War II. While he was overseas, Muriel joined the war effort by working on aircraft at the McDonnell-Douglas factory in Long Beach, California.
In 1942 Muriel, Jasper, her parents, and brothers were the founders of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Auburn. She was very involved in her church in Sunday School, Youth Group, Stewardship, Fellowship activities, and office assistance. In 2014, she became a founding, charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Auburn.
Muriel and Jasper had four children and helped raise Jasper’s nephew, Dean for several years. After the children were all school age, Muriel went to work for the U.S. Post Office as a rural letter carrier. She enjoyed her job and retired after over 20 years of service in 1983. Muriel was active in her beloved Auburn community through the 4-H Club, delivering food to shut-ins, as an election poll worker, and providing transportation for elders to doctor appointments. She loved musical theater and performance especially when her children were involved.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers Chris and Harmon Hauan. She is survived by her brother Lester Hauan, children Cheryl Punzalan, Susan Christensen, Don (Linda) Raught, and David Raught; three grandchildren-Melissa (Chris) Leamy, Erik (Mandy) Raught, and Catherine (Chris) Brown; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service is private with a memorial service planned for later in the year when we can once again gather and celebrate her life together. Memorial gifts may be given in her name to Our Savior Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 373, Auburn, California 95603, Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, or a charity of your choice.
