June 28, 1951 - Jan. 24, 2021.
Tom Gorin, 69, passed away due to an aggressive cancer, with his beloved wife and daughters at his side. Born in Sacramento, CA to Marie and Arthur Gorin, Tom was raised in a household that continually gave to their community and others. Tom exemplified these same values throughout his life.
Tom graduated from Sacramento High School in 1969 where he became an accomplished musician while playing in Sacramento High’s jazz and marching bands. He continued his career as a musician playing the piano in the John Skinner Orchestra. After graduating college from California State University, Sacramento with a mathematics degree he married his high school sweetheart, Doris, in 1973.
Shortly after graduating from college, Tom began his career as an energy forecaster for the State of California Energy Commission where he worked for more than 40 years. As a Lead Forecaster for the Forecasting and Planning Division, he was well known for his dedication to accurate forecasting of residential energy consumption and mentored many people during his career and into retirement.
Tom loved the outdoors. His hobbies in his younger years included backpacking, hiking, xcountry skiing, and camping with friends and family which led Tom and Doris to build a home and life in the community of Garden Valley, California. As a father he instilled a love of nature and athletics in his girls. He will be remembered as a fixture in the Divide community and Golden Sierra Athletics as a coach for both soccer and volleyball. He was the most loyal supporter of his daughters’ teams and athletic careers as a team Dad- from ordering uniforms, hosting team dinners and transporting team members to games and practices.
In his later years, his time was spent cooking for friends and family, traveling, xcountry skiing, hiking and kayaking. He was a proud volunteer with American River Conservancy and Sierra Regional Ski for Light. He was a dedicated and passionate guide for blind skiers, putting in countless hours to arrange dinners, serve on the board and guide blind skiers to some of his favorite areas throughout Tahoe Donner.
Tom is survived by the love of his life, Doris Gorin, his two loving daughters, Stacy Gorin and Shelley Gorin Moore and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his sister Clara Nevala. His fierce love for his family, devotion to his communities and integrity in all that he did shone brightly until the end. We will miss his smile, kindness, humor and generosity immensely.
A private memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to a charity of your choice, Sierra Regional Ski for Light (https://srsfl.org) or American Cancer Society (https://donate3.cancer.org).
