Tom grew up in Saratoga, the 9th of the 10 children of Leonard and Janet McCarthy. He and his twin brother Ted attended Sacred Heart Elementary and Archbishop Mitty High together. Tom enjoyed playing all sports from backyard games and childhood leagues through high school basketball and tennis teams, continuing to years of adult recreation leagues in basketball and softball. Tom also enjoyed watching and attending sporting events and could always tell stories from the history of the Giants, Forty Niners, Warriors, and his UCSB Gauchos.
Tom was the Salutatorian at his Mitty graduation before attending the University of California at Santa Barbara, graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He later earned an MBA at Santa Clara University.
After graduating college, Tom came home and started his professional career as a Mechanical Engineer designing enclosures used in the NASA Space Shuttle experiments in the San Jose area. After many years in the engineering field, he moved on to Sales and Marketing positions at Applied Materials.
Tom met his wife Maria in 1994, and they were married June 21, 1996, in Maria’s home town of Hamden, Connecticut. They were blessed with the additions of daughters Madison in 1998 and Gianna in 2002. As the girls grew up, Tom and Maria were kept busy with school plays, softball, soccer and volleyball games. Above all, Tom was a family man, enjoying time with Maria and the girls as well as his extended family. He had a clever and gentle nature, was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
Tom is survived by his wife of 29 years Maria Simeone-McCarthy, daughter Gianna; siblings Joe, Deel, Tim (Cynthia Porter), Maureen Donohoe (Pat), Phil (Paula), Rosemary (Eric Purviance), Ted (Gina), sister-in-law Zoe Cordova-McCarthy; numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews, and many New Mexico and Texas cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Pat and Mark, sister in-law Sue (Joe) and daughter Madison.
Special thanks goes to Tom’s caregiver Lui, Hearts & Minds Activity Center in San Jose, Sierra Ridge Memory Care Facility-Auburn, American River Hospice-Auburn and to “Team Tom”, the network of family and friends that gave their time so generously for Tom’s care.
