Vickie Gallagher Altman

November 28, 1959January 8, 2012

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our mother, sister, daughter, teacher, friend, aunt, motorcycle buddy and sister in Christ.

She leaves behind her son, Jeff of Rocklin, CA; daughter, Stephanie of Portland, OR; ex-husband, Scott of Rocklin, CA; mother and step-father, Joanne & Bill Ricks, AZ; brothers, Lawrence Gallagher, WA; Scott Gallagher, ID; step-brothers, Don Church, FL; Tom Church, MT; John Church, WA; and step-sister, Kathy Williamson, ID. Vickie was preceded in death by her father and step-mother, Charles (Bud) & Alice Gallagher of Renton, WA; and many heart-broken friends and beloved students.

Born in Renton, WA, Vickie lived throughout the Pacific Northwest. She graduated in 1983 from Walla Walla College in Washington State with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, got married, and stated her first teaching job in Seattle, that same year. In 1984 she and her husband, Scott, moved to Ukiah, CA, where Vickie put her teaching career on hold to take on the role of mother. She gave birth to her first child, Jeff, in July of that year, followed by the birth of her daughter, Stephanie, in 1986. When the family moved to Portland, OR, in 1987 she returned to teaching when her own children began school at Portland Adventist Elementary School. She later taught at Rivergate Adventist School and became principal there in 1995. In 1999, she came to Northern California and served at Echo Ridge SDA Elementary School in Nevada City from 1999 to 2003 and Pine Hills Adventist Academy in Auburn from 2004 to 2006. She then joined the teaching staff at Orangevale SDA School, where she was currently teaching kindergarten in the morning and classes for the seventh and eighth graders in the afternoon. In 2008, she completed her master’s degree in educational leadership from California State University, Sacramento. Vickie’s love of her profession was obvious in her interactions with her students. “Love what you do, and know that it matters … what could be more fun?” she once said.

When not in a classroom, Vickie’s other passion took her to activities requiring a helmet. She grew up riding motorcycles with her brothers and shared her joy of riding with her son and many others. She was an avid dirt bike and street bike rider and was doing what she loved when her life was cut short by a tragic accident just outside of Placerville. It was her love for her family, people, teaching, and God that will keep Vickie Altman forever in the hearts of many.

Arrangements under the direction of Chapel of the Hills, Auburn, CA.

To the family members of Vickie (Gallagher) Altman that I knew when we all were students at SJA in WA state - please accept my deepest, heartfelt and sincere condolences. My memories of Vickie are of a young student with a great dimpled smile who enjoyed life. She was genuine and that she was so loved by those she taught and worked with is not a surprise to me. May the Lord provide for each of you as well as the rest of her family, at times when needed most, memories, thoughts, kind words or a smile and hug that will help to ease your hurt and sorrow. Looking forward to that day and time of no more sorrow, no more pain.

Vickie was one of the best of the best in my book. I only worked for her for a couple of days, but she made an impact on me that will last my lifetime. The sandwich she made me was one of the best I have had in my life! See you in Heaven Vickie...

I am deeply saddened to hear of Vickie's passing. She had such a warm and loving spirit. I knew her from Echo Ridge, and gave her a miniature U.S Flag that was flown in a USAF U-2 "Spy Plane" for her son. My sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.

We were friends & neighbors with Vickie. We shared our love for riding, both on dirt & street. Vickie will live on in our hearts & on our adventures. Her beautiful bright blue eyes and warm smile will be greatly missed. Our loving prayers go out to Jeff & Stephanie; Your mom was an amazing person & was so proud of you both. Much love to the rest of her family as well, truly a devistating loss.

Every time I had the blessing of seeing you in my clinic you always put a smile on my face even though I knew you were the one that was hurting. I'll never forget you as long as I live. I pray that you have arrived in the Lords arms and he is holding you tight. God Bless you Vickie Altman.

Oh how I miss you my little-big sister. My heart is broken but I know that it will heal. There will always be a hole in it that only you can fill and that will happen one day in heaven. I love you. Your big-little brother, Scott

We are so sad. Vickie was an amazing, talented woman. We know she loved being a mother and a teacher. The void she left is very deep. Her life made a difference to many people.
