Arthur David Bert

Passed away on October 18, 2019

Arthur “David” Bert of Bloomfield Hills passed away on October 18, 2019. He was born in Mexico, Missouri and moved to Dearborn where he proudly held paper routes to earn money to support his model railroad hobby. At the University of Michigan, he majored in Science Engineering and Navy ROTC. He traveled the world through ROTC. Dave married Diane Kaiser Bert on the day they officially graduated and he became a commissioned officer. He earned his MBA from Wayne State University while beginning his career at General Motors as a computer systems analyst. Dave was a computer expert, and his enjoyment of computers was significant for the rest of his life.

Interests in trains, freighters, and nature continued throughout his life as he planned many trips to the Soo Locks, Port Huron, Cedar Point, campgrounds, and national parks. Family and friends were dear to him as he often reached out to them to visit. Dave treasured time spent with his beloved family, and his pride and love for them was always evident.

Dave is survived by his wife Diane, children Laurie (Daniel) Cooper and Cherie (Kyle) Heaser; grandchildren Kathryn, Benjamin, and Maxwell Cooper and Robert and Gregory Heaser. His brother Richard predeceased him. Sisters-in-law Joyce Hamburg and Martha Jane Bert-Wynn and beloved nieces and nephews also survive him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham on Saturday, October 26 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation on Friday, October 25 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 6:30-8:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, please consider an offering to our church or a nature conservancy of your choice.

I started at Chevrolet Information Systems in May, 1967. Didn’t know a thing about computers or computer programming. I was assigned to the Sales and Distribution programming group under Jim Hayes and Gil Preuss and given a COBOL Manual and a tutor. My tutor was Dave Bert, and he along with Tom Peek, were my “go to” guys whenever I had a question or needed any help in learning programming. I couldn’t have had a better tutor. I didn’t know Dave outside of work, but I am sure his character, patience, caring and understanding were just who he was. I was fortunate to have known Dave. My condolences to his family.

Your loves of hymns, trains, freighters, elephants, pandas, and the color red carries on in your descendants. Your unconditional love and caring set an excellent example for all of us. Thank you.
