He was predeceased by his parents Harvey and Adelaide Anderson Heiss, and his sister Nancy Heiss Stella.
Neil was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Donna Jean Hurlburt Heiss. They were married June 1, 1952 in Cleveland. They lived in Wickliffe Ohio for 40 years, in Winter Park, Florida for 10 years, and most recently in Rochester Hills, Michigan for 11 years.
Neil graduated from Kent State University with a BS in Education in 1951. He taught vocal and instrumental music grades K-12, taught 6th grade math and science, and taught private trumpet lessons. He was a lab technician at Lubrizol Corporation and he was a landlord of rental properties. His greatest joy was music. He played trumpet in dance bands wherever he lived, with his sons and grandchildren in various venues including American House, local churches, community bands, and with the Scottville Clown Band. Neil was known for his humor, telling daily jokes to his friends at American House. He was a car enthusiast, who restored Model A cars and enjoyed attending car shows.
Neil is survived by his children Holly S. (Gerald J. Clark) Heiss, Eric J. (Cassie) Heiss, Drew G. (Maura) Heiss; grandchildren Evan (Rachel), Nash, Sage, Adam, Britta, Dietrich, Siobhan, Gabrielle, and Gloria; his sister Judith (Henry) Presler; and many nieces and nephews.
