It is with deep sorrow and much love that our children and I announce the passing of my husband Jack. Jack was born on May 17, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to Lieutenant John Joseph and Bobbie Hofstetter. Jack also had a sister Barbara Ann that had passed away in 1970. Jack lived with his wife Dorothy and their four children in Bloomfield Hills for 55 years before he was welcomed home Monday July 24th, by his only son Gregory Shawn.
Jack was a graduate of Catholic Central High School where he played baseball. He then went on to play baseball for Michigan State University where he earned his Varsity letter as a second baseman. He graduated with a degree in economics which led him into a successful sales career in the Steel industry. For 65+ years he was loved and respected, and known as “a legend in his own time.” Buyers knew when he walked in the door there was always fun to be had and a deal to be closed. In later years, Jack created his own company JH Packaging and sold until the age of 89.
After graduation, he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army, as an Infantry Unit Commander and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was honored with the National Defense Service Medal. Jack was also fortunate to continue his love of baseball during his time in the service.
Besides his deep love for baseball and MSU sports, he was fortunate to find the love of his life. He hit a home run on July 1, 1961 when he married Dorothy Marie De Vita. Jack and Dorothy began their lives together in Beverly Hills before moving to Bloomfield Hills. They recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Our three daughters, Renee, Valerie and Kimberly will continue to honor their Dad as they live each day with love and laughter, as their father lived his life. His son-in-laws, John, Christian, and Dan will truly miss not knowing what he will be up to next and will forever debate who was “Jack’s favorite”.
Jack enjoyed fishing, golf, March Madness, his annual Christmas party with buddies, MSU tailgating, grandkids sporting events, a nice cold beer, Milk Duds, and an outing to Clark’s Ice Cream Parlor for his Praline Pecan. More than anything he loved to laugh! Jack’s pride and joy was his family and he always wanted enough grandchildren to have his own baseball team. His roster included Drew, Cameron, Jack, Shane, Sean, AbbeyJane, Ryan and LaneyMay.
In honor of Jack’s memory, his family invites all who loved him to celebrate his life, sharing stories and laughter that captured the essence of the remarkable man he was.
Arrangements have been made for visitation at Pixley Funeral home in Auburn Hills for Sunday, July 30th from 2-4pm and a rosary immediately following. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel in Bloomfield Hills, Monday July 31st at 10:00am. Jack will be interred at White Chapel Cemetery. The family has requested a private burial.
If you're so moved to honor Jack’s memory, you can make an offering to one of his favorite charities. Children’s Hospital of Michigan - Cardiovascular Research, Capuchin Soup Kitchen or the Michigan State University Baseball Excellence Fund.
Our family is extremely grateful for your prayers and thoughts at this difficult time.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.pixleyfhauburnhills.com for the Hofstetter family.
