Clifton H. Dow, Jr

Clifton “Clif” Harry Dow, Jr, 86, of Sabattus, Me., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at the Hospice Unit of the VA Center in Togus, Me., after fighting a battle with cancer. Pre- deceased by his wife Marylyne Dow in July 2000.

Clif was born in Lewiston on May 13, 1926, the son of Clifton H. Dow, Sr. and Emma Louise (Lombard) Dow and grew up in the Lewiston area. He entered the Army in 1944 and served in the 3rd Army Tank Battalion in Europe until the end of the European campaign. He returned home and married Marylyne Foisy on August 24, 1947.

Clif worked at Pineland Lumber, the Overhead Door Co., and retired from the carpentry shop at Bates College. He was known for his ability to craft fine furniture. He was infamous for creating masterpieces out of “scrap” wood such as wood pallets, which he retrieved from many places. His favorite pastime was garage sales, searching for treasures, meeting acquaintances, buying, selling, and mostly collecting tools of all sorts, types, and sizes.

Clif always had a little poem or song for every occasion and situation. Singing off key, you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth and he always had you laughing.

Clif is predeceased by two sisters, Mary Rae (Dow) Pelletier and Maude Louise (Dow) Dionne. He is survived by 14 nieces and nephews and a large number of great nieces and nephews. He will be remembered fondly and missed by all.

You are invited to share your condolences with the Dow family by visiting their guest book at www.thefortingroupauburn.com

By his request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. He will be interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Sabattus, next to his Marylyne. A service of The Fortin Group/Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home, Cremation and Monument Services, 217 Turner St. Auburn 783-8545

My parents Howard and Mary Dupee were close friends with Marylyne and Clif for many years. Through my parents I knew them both very well. I remember Clif being a great kidder, friendly and always so welcoming. He was an all around good person and I remember how obvious the love he had for Marylyne was. I also remember how he would make wonderful and cute things out of wood for Marylyne to paint and decorate. They made such a loving couple and they both will always have a warm place in my heart. My husband Robert also thought the world of them both. Our sympathy goes to all of of your family. I know Clif will be deeply missed. Take care.

We all called him Uncle Cliff and we will miss his humor. He has gone on to a better place and he is enjoying a cup of coffee with beloved Aunt Marylyne. Rest in peace. We all love you and miss you.

Cliff or PA as we liked to call him was not only our neighbor, but an extended member of our family. We couldn't have picked a better person to live next to, a big heart, kind words, and generous spirit. His home made wooden gifts and toys for our two boys will be cherished forever. He would break into song spontaneously and it would always make you smile. He will be sorely missed, but I know he missed his wife as well. Our family is grateful that we got to visit one more time before he left us. He will always have a special place in our hearts.

Our sincere condolences to the Dow family. Cliff had an amazingly positive and gracious attitude. He loved to see Kayla heading toward his room at Togus. He knew that he was her favorite!
