

It is with great sadness and wonderful memories that we announce the passing of Erma Metcilf Hughes. Erma, beloved wife of the late Joseph Hughes. Erma leaves to cherish her memory three children: Jim (Dotti); Jeanne (Bruce); John (Lisa), as well as six grandchildren, Greg (Kim); Kristy (Brett); Randy (Julie); Heidi (Joe); Michelle (Matthew) and Chad; four great-grandsons Isaac, Samuel, Eli and Leo ; a niece and nephew Betty Ann and Danny Green. Erma was predeceased by her first husband Owen Williams in 1941, her husband Joseph Hughes in 1981, her parents Edwin and Pearl Metcilf. Joe and Erma were active in churches, Sunday schools, kids’s crusades and camp meetings. Together they shared the gospel with many children using magic, music, puppets, stories and crafts. Erma had a passion for teaching and had a long career teaching music, drama, social studies. Most of her teaching career was with the Centennial School District in Portland, Oregon. Erma retired soon after the death of her husband Joe. After retiring she moved to Sun City, Arizona where she volunteered at the Southwest Indian School. She taught puppetry, drama and public speaking. After a few health scares Erma decided to move closer to her family. She moved to People Retirement Community in Tacoma, Washington and then to Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard, Washington. Erma enjoyed life at Ridgemont, first in the apartments then in Assisted Living and finally in Long Term Nursing Care. Erma was loved by staff and residents of Ridgemont. Erma accepted Christ as her Savior at a very young age. She served the Lord faithfully for 90 years. A memorial Service will be held to celebrate the life of Erma Hughes at Multnomah County Holiness Association Campground, 10801 SE Holgate Blvd Portland, Oregon 97266-2354 on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm. We will be meeting in the Hughes Chapel, names for Erma’s husband Joe. Donations may be made to the Hughes Chapel c/o Multnomah County Holiness Association.
