James was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and spent much of his working years as a pipe fitter and welder. Though he worked with his hands for a living, his heart was always on the land. For 30 years he lived a simple life on a farm in Viola, Tennessee, where he found his greatest joy in the outdoors, tending to farm life, fishing, hunting, and playing guitar. He was raised in Rock Springs, Florida, and carried his country roots with him wherever he went.
A devoted man of faith, James was very active in his church, Coastal Family Church in Palm Coast, where he participated in praise and worship teams and was known for his servant’s heart and steady spirit.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Gwen Owens; his son, Shawn Owens (Karen); his daughter, Sissy “Betty” Harrell (Chris); his grandchildren, Courtney Cubbedge (Brandon), Kayla Owens, Austin Owens, Kamarie Owens, Christopher Harrell (Crisstina), Troy Owens (Mariah), and Corey Harrell (Stephanie); and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael Owens (Robin), Thomas Phillip Owens (Terry), Scott Owens (Janie), and Steve Owens (Teresa).
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Roscoe Owens; his mother, Betty Joan Collins; his brother, Thomas Owens; his sisters, Brenda Owens and Charlotte Lalonde.
James will be remembered as a simple country man who loved family, faith, and the quiet peace of the outdoors.
