Maria Del Carmen "Chela" Trejo, 69, of Auburndale, FL passed away December 31, 2015. She was born July 13, 1946 in Edinburg, TX the daughter of Eladio & Clara Barajas. She was the eldest of the Barajas family and grew up as a migrant farmworker. In 1971 she joined the United Farmworkers to defend the rights of citrus workers across Florida. Later, in the 1980's she dedicated herself to helping the newly founded Farmworker's Ministry in Auburndale. In 2006, she came out of retirement to defend immigrant rights and became more driven once her daughter co-founded the Young American Dreamers in the pursuit for social justice and equal rights. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Mission in Wahneta, FL
Mrs. Trejo is survived by her husband: Juan Trejo, daughter: Maria Del Carmen Trejo, grandson: Jose Guadalupe Aguilar, and brothers: Valentin Barajas, Hilario Barajas, Pedro Barajas and Tomas Barajas, all of Auburndale.
Visitation is Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 5-8 pm at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, 2198 K-Ville Avenue, Auburndale, FL. Funeral Services are Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Mission, 2150 Bomber Road, Wahneta, FL.
