Marie was born on September 19, 1932, in Johnson City, New York, to Paul and Susie (Marek) Patinka. She spent her early years in New York before moving to Minnesota in 1954, where she married Michael John Schultz. Together they were blessed with four daughters and shared many years of devotion to family.
In 1959, Michael contracted bulbar polio and spent several years confined to an iron lung. Throughout this challenging time, Marie faithfully cared for her husband while raising their four young daughters. Her strength, perseverance, and dedication to her family were hallmarks of her life.
In 1975, the family relocated to Auburndale, Florida. Following Michael’s passing later that year, Marie remained in Florida with her family.
In 1977, Marie met Fred Von Holzen, whom she married on February 4, 1978. They shared more than 48 years of marriage and made their home in Winter Haven, Florida. Together they worked in property maintenance and later owned and managed rental properties. They enjoyed traveling, attending locksmith conferences, and spending time with family and friends.
A woman of deep faith, Marie devoted several years to volunteering at a local pregnancy center, where she found great joy in serving others. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and willingness to help anyone in need. She especially enjoyed collecting dolls, gardening, visiting local gardens, playing dominoes with family, and celebrating holidays and special occasions.
Family was the center of Marie’s life, second only to her unwavering faith in God. As a public expression of her faith, she was baptized on July 15, 2018, at The Vine Church in Troy, Alabama. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now rejoicing in the presence of her Savior.
Marie’s daughters extend their deepest gratitude to Fred for loving and caring for their mother so faithfully through every season of their marriage. Especially in her final years, he cared for her with extraordinary devotion, tenderness, and selfless love, honoring the vows they made to one another. His unwavering commitment brought comfort not only to Marie, but to her entire family, who will forever be grateful for the love and care he gave her.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; five brothers; her first husband, Michael John Schultz; and her granddaughter, Lindsay Bishop.
She is survived by her loving husband, Fred Von Holzen; her daughters, Sue Childress of Winter Haven, Florida; Cindy Dorman (Kenny) of Lakeland, Florida; Sandy Guy of Auburndale, Florida; and Laurie Caudill of Troy, Alabama; her stepdaughter, Tammy Dallmann of Woodruff, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, Kristi Baskin, Brittany Brooks, Stephie (Chris) Hutton, Danielle (Jon) Obermark, Stacey King, Brian (Amanda) King, Jenny (Rick) Troyer, and Logan Caudill; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
